New Range of Stainless Steel Wireless Load Links Available Ex-Stock from LCM Systems

As a result of working closely with industry and listening to the needs of users, load cell designer and manufacturer LCM Systems is pleased to announce the launch of their new WLL range of wireless load monitoring links, designed primarily for marine and offshore applications. Incorporating many new features, these stainless steel load links are one of the most innovative available on the market, with IP67 environmental sealing, 3.1b material certification, and a robust storage case supplied as standard. Also, having taken into account the short delivery times users of this type of load measuring equipment typically demand, all load ratings are ex-stock ready for immediate despatch. Available in capacities from 5 tonnes to 100 tonnes, the all stainless steel construction provides corrosion resistance, while the dimensions have been matched to suit standard shackle sizes to ensure suitability for a wide range of under-hook weighing applications. With safety and traceability becoming ever more important, users can rest assured, as the WLL series fully complies with the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Because these load links will be used in challenging and exposed environments, the design team at LCM Systems have utilised their unique telemetry housing that is robust enough to withstand day to day operational requirements, does not degrade in sunlight, yet is compact and light. The antenna is completely enclosed within the housing to protected it from damage, while two clips enable you to open the housing to access and change the batteries without the need for any tools, leaving the electronics safely sealed underneath. The load links have a transmission distance of 600 metres (clear line of sight) and are capable of more than 300 hours’ continuous use with AAA 1.2Ah batteries. The WLL series is also supplied as standard with a T24-HS-LS handheld battery powered indicator that can display in both tonnes and lbs, or alternatively, an optional T24-HA handheld display can address up to 12 load links for individual monitoring or for summation applications. For more complex systems, including data logging or monitoring/reporting requirements, a robust tablet PC with installed software is available for use with single or multiple load link installations. Supplied in a quality, lockable moulded polyurethane transit case that is highly durable and impervious to most chemicals and moisture, the WLL load links are fully protected when not in use and during transit. The robust construction of the transit case means that it will not dent or rust, and as it also features pre-cut foam inserts, the load link and handheld display will always remain securely in place. LCM Systems Launch New SOLAS Compliant Container Weighing System

In response to the new SOLAS regulations due to come into force on the 1st July 2016, LCM Systems is pleased to announce the launch of a cost effective, fully SOLAS compliant container weighing system. The company has been supplying container weighing systems for around 5 years with over 40 system sold to date, and have utilised this experience to design a flexible modular system that can be easily and quickly retrofitted onto straddle carriers, container cranes and telehandlers.

The system verifies the container weight in real-time to an accuracy of 1% of rated load, although higher accuracies can be achieved with on-site calibration and by utilising the in-built linearisation facility. The standard package is a complete stand-alone system that comprises of four load measuring pins that replace existing load bearing pins on the spreader block, an interface module and a ruggedised 8” tablet. Pre-wired cable assemblies are supplied for system connection, which allows installation to be carried out by untrained personnel as no wiring is required. This also reduces installation time and consequently equipment downtime, as well as facilitates fast and simple replacement of cables in the event of any becoming damaged.

The ruggedised tablet displays the load on each twistlock and the percentage of the overall weight it is carrying. This allows for the detection of possible damage to twistlocks due to overloading or unequal weight distribution during container engagement and lifting. Also displayed is the combined weight on all four twistlocks. There is a tare function and the facility to enter container numbers and generate reports. A calibration button on the main screen takes you to a new display screen that enables on-site calibration for optimal accuracy. The tablet is rated to IP67 and drop tested to 1.2m, making it perfect for harsh port environments.

Because every port is different the system can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual port. In addition to the standard package a system is available that can be fully integrated into the port Terminal Operating System (TOS) that offers flexibility in terms of data output and data provision. Other types of load cell systems are also available, including annular load cells that are placed around the twistlock assembly or arrangements that utilise the twistlock by turning it into a load measurement device in its own right. Wireless options are also available.

We have designed exceptional functionality into this system that significantly reduces costs by de-skilling the installation process, while at the same time speeding up the operation to keep equipment downtime to an absolute minimum. We also believe it is an extremely economical solution, with the standard package selling for under £5,000 (€6,200)”.

LCM Systems is the proud winner of the Action Coach Sustainable Performance Award. Presented at the Action Coach Awards Gala Dinner held at the Royal Albert Yacht Club in Portsmouth, LCM Systems won the Award in recognition of continued growth, despite very difficult market conditions.

Action Coach is a global business coaching enterprise that mentors business owners to improve their business through guidance and support. LCM Systems were selected as the business with the best sustainable performance from SME’s in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight region that are currently working with an Action Coach. The annual award ceremony is held in recognition of the businesses that have demonstrated outstanding improvements during the previous year.

As previous winners of the Business of the Year award in 2013, this latest award is in recognition of the procedures and systems put into place over the past two years that have helped build a comprehensive structure that can accommodate future planned growth. In particular, the focus on sales processes was highlighted has having been crucial in enabling the company to achieve a 3% growth increase. This has been realised despite a difficult trading year due to the low oil price, which has negatively impacted the oil & gas industry (a major market for the company), with many planned projects either postponed indefinitely or cancelled altogether. The sales team have worked very hard to convert enquiries and also exploit opportunities in other markets to help offset the downturn in the oil and gas industry. During the previous year LCM also continued to recruit and invest in new product developments, as well as opened a new office in Romania.

New 1500 Tonne Calibration Test Machine

LCM have recently a custom designed 1500 tonne calibration machine at our manufacturing facility in Newport, Isle of Wight. The addition of this machine to our calibration facilites means that all load cells, shackles and pins with capacities up to 1500 tonnes in compression and 150 tonnes in tension, can be calibrated in-house. For customers, this means that prices can be reduced and faster delivery times for large capacity load cells guaranteed. Also, as many of LCM Systems’ load cells are used in safety critical applications, all calibrations are traceable to national standards and accurate to 0.1% of rated load. 

Prior to its arrival, all load cells measuring loads over 200 tonnes had to be shipped to The National Physical Laboratory in Teddington for calibration, adding to the production time and also incurring additional costs. Having seen a large increase in the requirement for larger capacity load cells over the last few years, it became increasingly evident that investing in a bespoke calibration machine would not only dramatically speed up the production process, but would also pay for itself in just two years.

Having the ability to carry out calibrations up to 1500 tonnes is also rather unique, as apart from The National Physical Laboratory, there is only one other calibration machine in the UK capable of testing load cells with such high capacities.

The test machine represents a significant investment for LCM, which has been possible due to an increased demand for the company’s products, with growth over the last few years consistently around 30%.
