310kN Compression Load Cells

Supporting an ultra-deepwater gas project in the Black Sea 📰

6th Nov 2026

LCM Systems has supplied 20 stainless steel 3,100 kN compression load cells for installation on a Floating Production Unit (FPU), scheduled for completion in 2027.

The load cells will be integrated into a mooring pull-in jack system – heavy-duty hydraulic machinery used to haul in, tension and secure the massive anchor chains that keep the floating vessel safely in position.

The FPU will form part of an ultra-deepwater natural gas development, located approximately 170 km offshore in water depths of up to 2,150 metres.

Given the critical nature of the application and the challenging offshore environment, the project required an exceptionally high level of material traceability, inspection and independent verification.

Key features and quality assurance included:

  • ATEX/IECEx Explosion Protection (Ex d) approval for hazardous area operation.
  • Dual strain gauge bridge redundancy, providing continued measurement capability in the event of a strain gauge bridge failure.
  • 3.2 material certification (with intent) for enhanced material traceability.
  • Individual ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing of every load cell.
  • Final proof load testing and calibration witnessed by DNV.
  • DNV-approved design review and strength calculations.

Projects like this demonstrate the importance of combining robust engineering, specialist manufacturing and rigorous quality assurance when developing load measurement solutions for some of the world's most demanding offshore applications.
